Scrivener – Research Within Reach
https://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener/overview

Scrivener is the go-to app for writers of all kinds, used every day by best-selling novelists, screenwriters, non-fiction writers, students, academics, lawyers, journalists, translators and more. Scrivener won’t tell you how to write—it simply provides everything you need to start writing and keep writing. Tailor-made for long writing projects, Scrivener banishes page fright by allowing you to compose your text in any order, in sections as large or small as you like. Got a great idea but don’t know where it fits? Write when inspiration strikes and find its place later. Grow your manuscript organically, idea by idea. Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: hammer out every last detail before typing a word, or carve out a draft and restructure later. Or mix your methods and do a bit of both. In Scrivener, everything you write is integrated into an easy-to-use project outline. So working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a click away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop. Need to refer to research? In Scrivener, your background material is always at hand, and you can open it right next to your work. Write a description based on a photograph. Transcribe an interview. Take notes about a PDF file or web page. Or check for consistency by referencing an earlier chapter alongside the one in progress. Once you’re ready to share your work with the world, compile everything into a single document for printing, self-publishing, or exporting to popular formats such as Word, PDF, Final Draft or plain text. You can even share using different formatting, so that you can write in your favorite font and still satisfy those submission guidelines. This will be added to Journalism Resources Subject Tracer™. AGTK (Annotation Graph Toolkit)

July 23, 2018

AGTK (Annotation Graph Toolkit)
https://tla.mpi.nl/tools2/tooltype/annotation/agtk-annotation-graph-toolkit/

A suite of software components for building tools for annotating linguistic signals, time-series data which documents any kind of linguistic behavior (e.g. audio, video). The internal data structures are based on annotation graphs. Annotation Graphs are a formal framework for representing linguistic annotations of time series data. Annotation graphs abstract away from file formats, coding schemes and user interfaces, providing a logical layer for annotation systems. TLA-Team: The idea of the Annotation Graph Toolkit is based on the famous paper “Annotation Graphs” from Bird & Liberman which was the basis for tools such as ELAN. The AGTK does not seem to be actively maintained anymore. This will be added to Searching the Internet 2018 – The Primer. This will be added to Journalism Resources Subject Tracer™. Trova – Search Engine for Annotation Content Archived at The Language Archive
https://tla.mpi.nl/tools/tla-tools/trova/

Trova is a search engine for annotation content archived at The Language Archive. Searchable formats include ELAN EAF, Childes CHAT, Toolbox, PDF, SubRip, Praat TextGrid and others. Results can be viewed as concordance or frequency view and exported as CSV. Tool-tips show additional hit information and hits can be displayed in Annex. You can also jump to the corresponding archive tree location for each hit. To use Trova, select ‘annotation content search’ in the node context menu (right clicking on a node in the tree) when browsing the archive tree, or do a metadata search and proceed from the search results to a content search in the found sessions and resources. You can also select multiple nodes (corpora) in the archive tree, then right-click to get a context menu to search in multiple corpora at the same time. Paper – False Information on Web and Social Media: A Survey

June 26, 2018

Paper – False Information on Web and Social Media: A Survey
https://arxiv.org/pdf/1804.08559.pdf

“False information can be created and spread easily through the web and social media platforms, resulting in widespread real-world impact. Characterizing how false information proliferates on social platforms and why it succeeds in deceiving readers are critical to develop efficient detection algorithms and tools for early detection. A recent surge of research in this area has aimed to address the key issues using methods based on feature engineering, graph mining, and information modeling. Majority of the research has primarily focused on two broad categories of false information: opinion-based (e.g., fake reviews), and fact-based (e.g., false news and hoaxes). Therefore, in this work, we present a comprehensive survey spanning diverse aspects of false information, namely (i) the actors involved in spreading false information, (ii) rationale behind successfully deceiving readers, (iii) quantifying the impact of false information, (iv) measuring its characteristics across different dimensions, and finally, (iv) algorithms developed to detect false information. In doing so, we create a unified framework to describe these recent methods and highlight a number of important directions for future research.”. Misinformation Overload

June 23, 2018

Misinformation Overload
https://www.llrx.com/2018/04/misinformation-overload/

We live in uncertain times. With big data and a boom in our ability to transmit ideas comes a seemingly greater amount of erroneous information, and therefore the need for everyone to be able to properly identify, discredit, and prevent the spread of falsehoods. What follows is a tour of how much the misrepresentation of reality pervades our world (from whimsical pranks and well-intentioned hoaxes to full-blown propaganda intended to defraud and manipulate), concluding with a discussion of tactics for taking a rational and scientific view so that we may both decrease our susceptibility and improve our ability to detect misinformation.
