Biosemiotics

Biosemiotics
http://www.springerlink.com/content/120965/

Biosemiotics is dedicated to building a bridge between biology, philosophy, linguistics and the communication sciences. If it is true that biosemiotics is “the study of signs, of communication and of information in living organisms” (Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 1997, p.72), it is also true that, in time, it has acquired a more general scope. Today, its main challenge is the attempt to naturalize not only biological information but also biological meaning, in the belief that signs and codes are fundamental components of the living world. This implies that the history of life has largely been shaped by the appearance of new codes, from the genetic code that marked its origin to the codes of language that made us human. Biosemiotics has become in this way the leading edge of the research on the fundamentals of life, and is a young exciting field on the move. By providing both a place for and access to exceptional peer-reviewed papers on the emerging discipline of biosemiotics, the journal will offer an instrument of its development by publishing papers in all relevant areas of the sciences and the humanities.

Wolfram Demonstrations Project

Wolfram Demonstrations Project
http://demonstrations.wolfram.com/

Conceived by Mathematica creator and scientist Stephen Wolfram as a way to bring computational exploration to the widest possible audience, The Wolfram Demonstrations Project is an open-code resource that uses dynamic computation to illuminate concepts in science, technology, mathematics, art, finance, and a remarkable range of other fields. Its daily-growing collection of interactive illustrations is created by Mathematica users from around the world, who participate by contributing innovative Demonstrations. Interactive computational resources have typically been scattered across the web–requiring specialized programming knowledge that’s made them difficult and expensive to develop. As a result, their coverage has long been limited, and progress has been slow. In many ways, The Wolfram Demonstrations Project introduces a new paradigm for exploring ideas. The power to easily create interactive visualizations, once in the domain of computing experts alone, is now in the hands of every Mathematica user. OldVersion.com – Older Versions of Various Software Programs

OldVersion.com – Older Versions of Various Software Programs
http://www.OldVersion.com/

Sometimes upgrading to a newer version can be a good thing. Other times, your computer may not be compatible with the new version, the new version is bloated, or all the options you liked are no longer available. OldVersion.com has been supplying the online community with old versions of various programs since 2001. The service is utilized by thousands of users every day and has been featured in newspapers and magazines as well as on radio and television. OldVersion.com has several objectives. One is to discourage the use of spyware by software companies. Also known as adware, these hidden programs come bundled with certain applications and secretly transmit user information via the Internet to advertisers. It is sometimes possible to avoid spyware by downloading an older version of a program. Use OldVersion.com and show the industry your dissatisfaction with these types of business practices. OldVersion.com assists computer users who are unable to continually upgrade their computer. Those who find that their machine is not able to run the latest version of a certain application have no choice but to use an old version of the program. Unfortunately, the vast majority of software companies do not offer this opportunity. They are doing their small part to help bridge the digital divide by allowing everyone to enjoy the same software titles regardless of their hardware.
