RIPE Atlas is being used by many researchers and network operators worldwide, and you might have seen it mentioned in numerous blog posts or other publications. RIPE Atlas is a global network of probes that actively measure Internet connectivity and reachability, providing an unprecedented understanding of the state of the Internet in real time. Since its start in 2010, we’ve distributed thousands of these little probes all over the globe. People are generally very excited to participate in this project, not only because it helps improve our understanding of the Internet as a whole for the benefit of everyone, but also because there are a lot of personal benefits for those hosting probes in their networks. PhDTree – Academic Genealogy Wiki
http://phdtree.org/

PhDTree is a Wiki project to document the academic family tree of PhDs worldwide, both past and present. The goal is to build the most comprehensive academic genealogy Wiki for every discipline. Science and human civilization can not move forward without the hard work of PhDs. They believe every PhD should have a permanent Wiki page to record his/her contribution to the advancement of science and technology. By PhD, in its broadest sense, they mean doctorates, researchers, scholars, and scientists in general. These include undergrad research assistants, master students, doctorate candidates, postdoc fellows, lecturers, professors, staff scientists, industry R&D professionals, and independent researchers. Other research and professional doctorates such as M.D., J.D., Ed.D., Psy.D., Pharm.D. are also included. phdtree.org is a crowd-sourced wiki website: anyone can create new profiles or edit existing profiles. Read the FAQ first if you have any questions about using the Wiki. This will be added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

JNeurosci: The Journal of Neuroscience

JNeurosci: The Journal of Neuroscience
http://www.jneurosci.org/

As the official journal of the Society of Neuroscience, JNeurosci: The Journal of Neuroscience holds a special place of honor in the brain science community. Published weekly, the periodical manages to uphold an impressive standard of quality, exhibiting an impact factor of 6.344 (meaning the average article is cited about 6 times), and an impressively short turnaround between author submission and editorial feedback, making for increased relevance of published research. Recent articles have included examinations of the synaptic alterations, investigations into the minutia of the dorsal hippocampus, and an exposition on Goal-Directed Decision Making with Spiking Neurons. Readers who are not members of the Society, or part of a large library system with access to academic journals, will want to scout for the tags (red in the current issue, yellow in archived ones) that indicate which items are Free Access Articles. While the number of these featured articles changes each week, readers can rely on a hearty archive of freely available reading on groundbreaking neuroscience topics.
