The OPTE Project

April 04, 2016

The OPTE Project
http://www.opte.org/

This project was originally created to generate a picture (or map) of the Internet. Since the Internet is basically a vast constellation of networks that somehow interconnect to provide the relatively seamless communication of data, it seemed logical one could draw lines from one point to another. The visualization is a collection of programs that collectively output an image of every relationship of every network on the Internet. The result was an award-winning representation of the Internet that now hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. The idea turned into a 10+ year labor of love under the moniker of The Opte Project. The map has been used an icon of what the Internet looks like in hundreds of books, in movies, museums, office buildings, educational discussions, and countless publications. The map has also become a teaching tool, allowing people that are visual learners to quickly understand what the Internet and networking is about. The images are released under a creative commons license, which allows anyone to use it for non-commercial purposes. For commercial use, there is a single one-time license fee which goes to support this project. There are many other answers in our FAQ section of the site. This will be added to World Wide Web Reference Subject Tracer™.

dat – Share and Sync Data Instantly

dat – Share and Sync Data Instantly
http://dat-data.com/

Dat is an grant funded, open source project housed in US Open Data. While dat is a general purpose tool, they focus on science. The high level goal of the dat project is to build a streaming interface between every database and file storage backend in the world. By building tools to build and share data pipelines they aim to bring to data a style of collaboration similar to what git brings to source code. The first code went into dat on August 17th 2013. The first six months were spent making a prototype (thanks to the Knight foundation Prototype Fund) and the last six months have been spent on taking dat beyond the prototype phase and into something more concrete (the Dat Alpha release). In April 2014 they were able to expand the team working on dat from 1 person to 3 persons, thanks to support from the Sloan foundation. Sloan’s proposition was that they like the initial dat prototype but wanted to see scientific data use cases be treated as top priority. As a result they expanded the scope of the project from its tabular data specific beginnings and have focused on adding features that will help us work with larger open scientific datasets.
