Antarctic Report

Antarctic Report
https://www.antarcticreport.com

The Antarctic Report is a New Zealand-based publication dedicated to reporting on “the hard science which underlines the importance of Antarctica as a bellwether of global climate change.” The website emerged from World Science Week, a 2014 conference in Auckland, New Zealand where scientists, researchers, and governmental science advisors from around the world gathered for a series of summits. On this website, visitors can learn about research and news related to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. For instance, one recent article explores the use of long-range drones to study the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. Another article shares the Antarctic Treaty. Drafted in 1959, this treaty stipulated that Antarctica “shall continue forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become the scene or object of international discord” – making the continent a highly unique space. Visitors interested in learning more about this aspect of Antarctica will want to check out the Reference section, where pieces discuss Antarctic history, geography, and policy. The NCBI Style Guide

The NCBI Style Guide
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK988

One of the most challenging aspects of any kind of academic writing is remembering discipline-specific style rules. For researchers and writers in biotechnology, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has created this comprehensive and easy-to-use style guide that may help. The digital publication is divided into two parts: tips for general writing and tips for the biotechnology field. Part I includes guidelines for grammar, punctuation, and style that will be helpful to writers in any field. In fact, writing instructors may want to point students towards this section, which includes notes on “Wordy Constructions to Avoid” and “Voice: Active versus Passive.” Part II outlines disciplinary conventions in biotechnology with special attention to writing for web pages. Block & Flow

January 03, 2017

Block & Flow
http://www.blockandflowapp.com

Block & Flow is a free productivity iOS application and Google Chrome extension that uses the pomodoro technique (short work intervals followed by brief, regular breaks) and provides users with self-generated data about how they spend their time. Users create a number of categories to describe work activities (e.g. writing, email, studying, etc), then assign each of these tasks a color. Next, users select from their self-designed categories as they start to work. A timer, in the shape of block, appears on the  screen for 25 minutes. Once this time is over, users are prompted to take a 5 minute break. Block and Flow is unique from other pomodoro devices in that users can then view the amount of time – or total blocks – they spend each week on each of their self-created categories. This allows users to regularly assess and adjust their work habits and productivity. This will be added to Entrepreneurial Resources Subject Tracer™. State of Startups 2016

January 02, 2017

State of Startups 2016
http://stateofstartups.firstround.com/

Last year, they launched State of Startups to capture what it means to be an entrepreneur. They asked the leaders of venture-backed companies about everything from the fundraising environment to their working relationships with their co-founders to their office’s price per square foot. Hundreds of founders responded and more than a million people read the results. This year, they aimed to refresh — and enhance — their in-depth snapshot of founders and startups across the entire tech ecosystem. They asked several of the same questions to track shifting sentiment and trends across years, but also delved into new areas such as how founders pick their lead investor and the perspectives they have on diversity and inclusion. At First Round, they continue to learn from founders, whether it’s through the First Round Review, their many events or online forums. From August to September 2016, they gathered responses from over 700 founders (from inside and outside the First Round community), who generously shared their observations, opinions and experiences.
