Dark Data

December 17, 2019

Dark Data
https://wiki.atlan.com/dark-data

Data that’s regularly collected and stored, but rarely organized for further analysis. Dark data refers to data that has been collected and stored, but not organized in a usable format for further data analysis. As a result, you cannot use it for decision-making. It is called dark because it is unexplored. According to Gartner, dark data is “the information assets organizations collect, process and store during regular business activities, but generally fail to use for other purposes.” Customer call records are an example of dark data. These types of records are regularly recorded and stored, but rarely organized or analyzed. Other examples of dark data include social network feeds, financial statements, raw survey data, emails, log files, geo-location data and notes, among others. Dark data is complex and difficult to categorize. Often, it requires large amounts of resources to be processed and analyzed. However, it offers significant value to organizations for extracting critical insights that can drive tremendous business value. For example, customer call records can indicate customer sentiment. Web server logs can reveal visitor behavior. Organizations can use these insights to improve their products or services. This will be added to Business Intelligence Resources Subject Tracer™. Open Knowledge Maps

Open Knowledge Maps
https://openknowledgemaps.org/

Their goal is to revolutionize discovery of scientific knowledge. We are building a visual interface that dramatically increases the visibility of research findings for science and society alike. We are a non-profit organization and we believe that a better way to explore and discover scientific knowledge will benefit us all. Advantages: a) Get an overview of a research topic: knowledge maps provide an instant overview of a topic by showing the main areas at a glance, and papers related to each area. This makes it possible to easily identify useful, pertinent information; b) Separate the wheat from the chaff: we cluster similar papers together. This makes it easier to identify relevant content when you are searching for an ambiguous term, or when you would like to identify content from a single discipline in a multidisciplinary field; c) Identify relevant concepts: one of the most difficult tasks when you are new in a research field is to learn the “language” of the field. Open Knowledge Maps makes it easier for you by labeling research areas with relevant concepts; and d) Identify relevant concepts: one of the most difficult tasks when you are new in a research field is to learn the “language” of the field. Open Knowledge Maps makes it easier for you by labeling research areas with relevant concepts. How It Works: 1) An Open Knowledge Maps visualization presents you with a topical overview for your search term. It is based on the 100 most relevant documents for your search term; 2) They use text similarity to create the knowledge maps. The algorithm groups those papers together that have many words in common; and 3) The visualization is intended to give you a head start on your literature search. You can also use Open Knowledge Maps to stay up-to-date – just limit your search to the most recent papers in the options. This will be added to Business Intelligence Resources Subject Tracer™. TeachEngineering: Big Data, What Are You Saying?

December 10, 2019

TeachEngineering: Big Data, What Are You Saying?
http://www.teachengineering.org/activities/view/und-1721-big-data-collection-manipulation-analysis

Big data is the massive accumulation of digital information collected by governments, corporations, and other institutions. Although “we analyze and utilize less than one-half a percent of the data that exists,” big data is a quickly growing field with implications spanning from healthcare and policy decision-making to entertainment. High school educators looking to introduce students to this exciting field should check out this hands-on activity from TeachEngineering, which covers the basics of data collection and analysis. Students work in pairs and begin by finding and importing data into Excel, where they then clean and chart these data. Next, each pair calculates relevant statistics and “summarize[s] their work by suggesting product launch strategies and reporting their findings and conclusions in class presentations.” Geared toward students in grades 9-12, this lesson plan includes PDF and Word document versions of a data finding tip sheet, a worksheet to help students work with data in Excel, presentation rubrics, and an Excel example (using ESPN data). At the above link, readers will also find an overview of assignment procedures, big data vocabulary definitions, guidance on assessment, troubleshooting tips, and more. NPR: Life Kit

December 06, 2019

NPR: Life Kit
https://www.npr.org/lifekit

Readers from virtually all backgrounds and life stages can pick up helpful tips from Life Kit, a unique podcast series from National Public Radio (NPR) that describes itself as a “family of audio guides for navigating your life — everything from your finances to sleep to exercise to raising your kids.” Since its launch in December 2018, Life Kit has created guides on 16 different topics (as of this write-up) that are organized into themes such as Money, Health, and Parenting. Each guide includes several episodes that take listeners through basic as well as more complex questions on that topic. For example, the guide on How to Make Friends opens with an episode on the need to “accept the awkwardness” of making friends in general, while subsequent episodes discuss how to cope with friendships that have changed (or ended) and how the culture of masculinity is “making it hard for [men] to maintain friendships.” Episodes are typically about 20-25 minutes long, and readers can subscribe to an individual topic (e.g. Parenting: Difficult Conversations), to all guides within a theme (e.g. all Parenting episodes), or to the entire Life Kit series via their favorite podcast platform.
