Newseum: Digital Classroom
http://www.newseum.org/digital-classroom/default.aspx

If you can’t get to the Newseum in Washington, D.C., you’ll definitely want to check out its Digital Classroom. Created to help bring the “First Amendment to life for students,” the site contains primary sources, interactives, videos, and lesson plans for everyone. From the homepage, visitors can make their way through areas that include Modules, Video Lessons, Primary Sources, and Standards of Learning. The Video Lessons area contains twelve different wonderful programs, including “The Berlin Wall and the Press” and “The Digital Revolution.” Moving on, the Modules provide a thoughtful look at how the First Amendment shaped the civil rights movement and the 2012 Election. Finally, the site includes a rich Primary Sources area which includes newspaper front pages from the Civil War along with 30 artifacts from the struggle to secure women’s rights in the United States. Glean – Finding the Best Educational Videos for Students

Glean – Finding the Best Educational Videos for Students
https://glean.co/

Hundreds of amazing teachers post educational videos online every day. At Glean, they have structured and organized these videos, tagged them by educational standard, and wrapped them in interactive tools (like Q&A and practice exercises). They have even built technology to pick the ideal teacher for the student based on his/her learning style and ability. Their technology works by pairing students with the best lessons for them. Together their team of teachers have watched these lessons, studying and collecting a number of details on every lesson – setting, pace, teaching style, grade level, and more! With Glean, students discover lessons by searching or browsing directly within a subject. Once a topic is chosen, Glean will quickly scan and analyze all the teachers within that topic to find those who match a student’s learning style closest. And if the video is not quite right for them, tell Glean and it gets better. They are a small team with a big vision, and they believe everyone, everywhere deserves a free world-class education. They are a group of technologists and school teachers from the same team that created SchoolRack, a leading learning management system. Open Educational Resources

Open Educational Resources
http://open.ems.psu.edu/

Many faculty members of Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences have created digital educational resources for their students. In the interest of sharing these excellent resources, the Open Educational Resources site presents digital video, texts, simulations, animations and illustrations crafted by these learned individuals. First-time users can get started by looking over the Featured Content area, which brings together everything from a hands-on, Flash-based application that helps students learn about energy consumption to a lesson on seismic hazards. Additionally, visitors can also sign up to receive updates about new additions to the site and also learn more about contributing their own work. BASE – Bielefeld Academic Search Engine

January 20, 2014

BASE – Bielefeld Academic Search Engine
http://www.base-search.net/

BASE is one of the world’s most voluminous search engines especially for academic open access web resources. BASE is operated by Bielefeld University Library. As the open access movement grows and prospers, more and more repository servers come into being which use the “Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting” (OAI-PMH) for providing their contents. BASE collects, normalises, and indexes these data. BASE provides more than 50 million documents from more than 2,700 sources. You can access the full texts of about 75% of the indexed documents. The Index is continuously enhanced by integrating further OAI sources as well as local sources. Our OAI-PMH Blog communicates information related to harvesting and aggregating activities performed for BASE. BASE is a registered OAI service provider and contributed to the European project “Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research” (DRIVER). Database managers can integrate the BASE index into your own local infrastructure (e.g. meta search engines, library catalogues) via an interface. In comparison to commercial search engines, BASE is charcterized by the following features: a) Intellectually selected resources; b) Only document servers that comply with the specific requirements of academic quality and relevance are included; c) A data resources inventory provides transparency in the searches; d) Discloses web resources of the “Deep Web”, which are ignored by commercial search engines or get lost in the vast quantity of hits.; e) The display of search results includes precise bibliographic data; f) Several options for sorting the result list; g) “Refine your search result” options (by author, subject, DDC, year of publication, collection, language and document type); and h) Browsing by DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification) and document type. Saylor Foundation – Free Education

January 17, 2014

Saylor Foundation – Free Education
http://www.saylor.org/

Free and open courses on your schedule offered by The Saylor Foundation (under its legal name, The Constitution Foundation)and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Foundation was established in 1999 by Michael J. Saylor, the Chairman and CEO of the business intelligence company MicroStrategy, Inc. and the Foundation’s sole trustee. Mr. Saylor created the Foundation because he had a very simple, very earnest, and very bold idea: Education should be free. As changes in technology have made the distribution of information easier, high-quality educational materials have become increasingly digital and readily accessible to anyone with an Internet connection. Since 2008, the Foundation’s free education initiative (www.saylor.org) has focused on exploring the promise of the Internet to drive the cost of education to zero and expand access to quality open educational resources (OER). Toward this end, they have built over 300 free, self-paced, online courses, with many more on the way. They hire credentialed educators to create course blueprints and to locate, vet, and organize OER materials into a structured and intuitive format. Their consulting professors also create original OER content and link to freely posted materials to fill in any gaps. Each course culminates with a final exam, and students receiving a passing grade can download a certificate of completion. Their current focus is on the undergraduate college level with the goal of producing high course and program completion rates. While we do not confer degrees, we do offer the knowledge equivalent of college majors in many popular disciplines, provide a number of professional development options, have a suite of math and ELA courses for grades 6-12, and are making strides in our student credit pathways.
