Center for Humane Technology
http://humanetech.com/

Technology is hijacking our minds and society. Their world-class team of deeply concerned former tech insiders and CEOs intimately understands the culture, business incentives, design techniques, and organizational structures driving how technology hijacks our minds. Since 2013, they have raised awareness of the problem within tech companies and for millions of people through broad media attention, convened top industry executives, and advised political leaders. Building on this start, we are advancing thoughtful solutions to change the system. This will be added to World Wide Web Reference Subject Tracer™. Web Integrity Project
https://sunlightfoundation.com/web-integrity-project/

Their mission is to monitor changes to government websites, holding our government accountable by revealing shifts in public information and access to Web resources, as well as changes in stated policies and priorities. They work with journalists to make our findings public, and they produce policy analyses to evaluate and recommend changes to Web governance practices and help ensure access to valuable Web resources. The Web Integrity Project builds on the collective work that our co-founders help lead in their roles on the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative’s Website Monitoring Team, which tracks and reports on changes to federal environmental, climate, and energy Web resources. Features include: a) Monitoring Federal Websites – Their reports documenting changes in content and access to resources on federal websites, with an initial focus on health and healthcare. Tune-in for new releases!; and b) Web Governance Policy – They are developing frameworks for understanding website changes and policy analyses, to work toward improved laws, regulations, and guidance that ensure continued access to public Web resources. Database: Search, Sort and Learn About Collaborative Journalism Projects From Around the World

Database: Search, Sort and Learn About Collaborative Journalism Projects From Around the World
https://collaborativejournalism.org/database-search-sort-learn-collaborative-projects-around-world/

Over the past several months, the Center for Cooperative Media has been collecting, organizing and standardizing information about dozens and dozens of collaborative journalism projects around the world. Their goal was to build a database that could serve as a hub of information about collaborative journalism, something that would be useful to journalists, scholars, media executives, funders and others seeking information on the how such projects work, who’s doing them and what they’re covering. They worked with Melody Kramer to build the first iteration of the database, which you can find below. It is a work in progress, and you’ll see that it’s still incomplete as they continue to add to it. So far for this soft launch, they have input information on 94 news collaborations between more than 800 organizations and 151 people. This will be added to Journalism Resources Subject Tracer™. JournalGuide – Find the Best Journal for Your Research
https://www.journalguide.com/

JournalGuide is a free tool created by a group of software developers, former researchers, and scholarly publishing veterans at Research Square. Their goal for JournalGuide is to bring all sources of data together in one place to give authors a simple way to choose the best journal for their research. Their data sources include major industry data sets, public resources, information submitted directly by journal editors, and even real-life publishing experiences submitted by authors like you. They are just getting started, but they will continually expand their database to include more areas of study and new sources of information. A growing journal database across all academic fields. Search, filter, sort, and compare journals from more than 46,000 titles. Features include: a) Search – They offer four different ways to search, with filter and sort options to help you find the best journal for your paper in any field; b) Compare – Select up to three journals to compare side-by-side on key factors like impact, publication speed, cost, and open access options; and c) Follow – Follow your favorite journals for easy reference. Stay up-to-date on recent Editor announcements and updated journal data. This will be added to Journalism Resources Subject Tracer™. Wikipedia: Journal Sources

Wikipedia: Journal Sources
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Journal_sources

This page links to library searches, online databases, and other venues where you can locate a journal article by title, journal, or identifier (such as DOI or PMID). It’s a good idea to start with a search engine, as it will have the most comprehensive coverage. However, many of the online databases listed below include free full text. If you’re looking for a source that isn’t a journal article, try the Find your Source guide. For books, you can also use Special:BookSources to search by ISBN. SciRev – Speeding Up Scientific Knowledge Production

January 31, 2018

SciRev – Speeding Up Scientific Knowledge Production
https://scirev.org/

SciRev.sc is a website made by researchers for researchers. The information they receive is freely available to the entire research community. By offering researchers the possibility to share their experience with the review process, they aim to make the scientific review process more transparent. Efficient journals get credits for their efforts to improve their review process and the way they handle manuscripts. Less efficient journals are stimulated to put energy in organizing things better. Researchers can search for a journal with a speedy review procedure and have their papers published earlier. Editors get the opportunity to compare their journal’s performance with that of others and to provide information about their journal at our website. Their new service, free scientific ads, is meant to strengthen communication among scientists across the globe. Given that their website is visited each day by thousands of researchers from all scientific fields, placing a SciRev ad provides a unique opportunity to send out a message to the global scientific community. The SciRev website is facilitated by the SciRev Foundation, which aims to help science by making the peer review process more efficient. This process is one of the weakest links in the process of scientific knowledge production. Valuable new knowledge lays untouched at reviewers’ desks and editorial offices for extended periods of time. This is an unnecessary loss of time in the scientific process which otherwise has become much more efficient. SciRev helps speeding up this process by making it more transparent. Researchers get the possibility to share their review experiences with their colleagues, who therefore can make a better informed choice for a journal to submit their work to. Journals that manage to set up a more efficient review process and which handle manuscripts better are rewarded for this and may attract more and better manuscripts. Cofactor – Journal Selector

January 31, 2018

Cofactor – Journal Selector
http://cofactorscience.com/

The idea for Cofactor arose out of the experience of their founder, Anna Sharman. In her years in the lab as a biologist, as a journal editor and as a freelance editor Anna saw the disconnect between what researchers submitted to journals and what the journals wanted. She saw how journals are cutting costs and offering less copyediting and proofreading of research papers after they are accepted, relying instead on authors to get their papers checked. She saw how quickly the world of scientific publishing is changing and how difficult researchers find it to keep up with new developments. She learnt about open access, new forms of peer review, new ways of processing and presenting research results, and new standards for publication. Finding this new world exciting, Anna wanted to help researchers navigate their way through the publication process. And Anna wanted to help researchers. She had been a PhD student and postdoc herself, struggling to publish enough to get the next job, so she knew the pressures researchers are under. After fifteen years working for publishers she decided to change her focus to helping scientists. So she gathered a team of highly qualified freelance editors around her and launched Cofactor. Now Cofactor has been established for over three years and has over 50 freelance editors. Our workshops have taken place in more than 20 universities and institutes in the UK, Europe and further afield. Hundreds of scientists have benefited from Cofactor’s expert editing and advice, and many more will in the future. In biochemistry, a cofactor is a small molecule or even an atom that helps an enzyme to do its job. Cofactor is here to help you do your job as a scientist.
