Pundit Annotator Pro
http://thepund.it/annotator-pro-web-annotation/

Pundit Annotator Pro is the perfect tool for researchers, journalists and professionals who want to exploit the power of semantic technology while annotating the web by building semantic relations with other web pages, text fragments or Wikipedia. Annotation consists in attaching data to a document or to a fragment of it, by providing additional information (metadata) about an existing resource. Semantic Annotation allows you to bridge the ambiguity of the natural language when expressing notions and their computational representation in a formal language. By telling a computer how data items are related and how relations can be evaluated automatically, it becomes possible to process complex operations such as filtering and searching. Pundit Annotator Pro is an advanced tool for semantic web annotation: it allows you to highlight and comment on any text and to create semantic annotations (with one or more triples) on any web page. It is designed for professional users who want to exploit the power of web annotation and the semantic web: a) scholars, who want to perform advanced critical editions; b) journalists, and in particular structured journalists; and c) any user interested in exploiting the potential of semantic web and linked data. WikiTRIBUNE News Platform

WikiTRIBUNE News Platform
https://www.wikitribune.com/

WikiTribune is a news platform that is primarily about volunteers doing neutral, factual, high-quality news. The WikiTribune community strives to create articles with a very high degree of transparency and accountability. The most important thing to understand is that you can edit every story at WikiTribune. You’ll start out with a surprising amount of permission to edit things from day one. After you’ve been around a bit and shown yourself not to be disruptive, you’ll be promoted to being able to publish articles directly. And when the community really finds you genuinely trustworthy (and nice!) you can be promoted to admin. As you have fun with WikiTribune, you’ll likely run into staff members – who are here to support you, not to boss you. This will be added to Journalism Resources Subject Tracer™. A batch of stories will be submitted to the platform and they will be scored on a scale of 1 to 5 based on their journalistic quality. This process will be performed automatically and in real time. They define quality narrowly; in its simplest terms, they look for value-added journalism. This means coverage built on a genuine journalistic approach: depth of reporting, expertise, investigation, analysis, ethical processes, and resources deployed by the newsroom. The platform is based on a combination of two models. — The first model involves two sets of “signals” to assess the quality of journalistic work: Quantifiable Signals and Subjective Signals. Quantifiable Signals are collected automatically. These signals include the structure and patterns of the HTML page, advertising density, use of visual elements, bylines, word count, readability of the text, information density (number of quotes and named entities). Subjective Signals are based on criteria used by editors (and intuitively by readers) to assess the quality of a story: writing style, thoroughness, balance & fairness, timeliness, etc. (This set will be used only in the building phase of the model). The second model is based on deep learning techniques, like “text-embedding” in which texts from large volumes of data (millions of articles) are converted into numerical values to be fed into a neural network. This neural net returns probabilities of scoring. This will be added to Journalism Resources Subject Tracer™. This will be added to Information Quality Resources Subject Tracer™. Media Menipulation Initiative (MMI)

November 17, 2018

Media Menipulation Initiative (MMI)
https://datasociety.net/research/media-manipulation/

Efforts to exploit technical, social, economic and institutional configurations of media can catalyze social change, sow dissent, and challenge the stability of social institutions. The Media Manipulation Initiative (MMI) examines how different groups use the participatory culture of the internet to turn the strengths of a free society into vulnerabilities, ultimately threatening expressive freedoms and civil rights. Efforts to exploit technical, social, economic, and institutional configurations of media can catalyze social change, sow dissent, and challenge the stability of social institutions. Broadly, this initiative takes a sociotechnical approach to understanding the social, political, and economic incentives to game information systems, websites, platforms, and search engines—especially in cases where the attackers intend to destabilize democratic, social, and economic institutions. Through empirical research, they identify the unintended consequences of socio-technical systems and track attempts to locate and address threats, with an eye towards increasing organizational capacity across fields, so that action can be taken as problems emerge. From social movements, to political parties, governments, dissidents, and corporations, many groups engage in active efforts to shape media narratives. Media manipulation tactics include: planting and/or amplifying misinformation and disinformation using humans (troll armies, doxxing, and bounties) or digital tools (bots); targeting journalists or public figures for social engineering (psychological manipulation); gaming trending and ranking algorithms, and coordinating action across multiple user accounts to force topics, keywords, or questions into the public conversation. Because the internet is a tool, a tactic, and a territory – integral to challenging the relations of power– studying the new vulnerabilities of networked media is fundamental to the future of democracies.
