Know It Wall (KiW) – A Place for Inquisitive Minds
http://knowitwall.com/

It is estimated that well over two million academic papers are published each year and there are countless more university lectures. Who is accessing this knowledge? Academics within the same disciplines and their students. Why should it only be them? We couldn’t think of a good reason either! The mission of Know it Wall (KiW) is to take the research that is going on at top universities and present it to the general public in an accessible and engaging way. At KiW, you will find audio and video documentaries, as well as short articles, about the latest research in the humanities and sciences — all written by academics actively doing research in those fields. Experiment – Platform for Funding Scientific Discoveries

January 16, 2018

Experiment – Platform for Funding Scientific Discoveries
https://experiment.com/

Experiment is a community for funding and sharing real scientific discoveries. Over 127,000 members supporting 744 funded experiments are helping to push the boundaries of knowledge. You can fund a dinosaur fossil excavation, a historical study of medieval monestaries, or an experiment on the International Space Station. If it helps unlock new knowledge, then we can fund it. They have the technology. Every dollar you contribute towards science helps push the boundaries of knowledge. Backers directly fund the project scientists, so there is no overhead involved (compared 50-60% when receiving a grant at a university). Experiment is an all-or-nothing funding platform. This means the project must reach the funding target, or no one’s pledges are charged. Anyone can start a new experiment, as long as the results can be shared openly. All projects are rigorously reviewed, provided feedback, and scientifically approved by the Experiment team. Scientists share progress, data, and results directly with backers, many widely available as open access and citeable. As a backer, you’ll be able to see how much of a scientific impact you’ve made. There have been 20 published papers in scientific journals through funded experiments! This will be added to Knowledge Discovery Subject Tracer™. The Journal of Brief Ideas

December 22, 2017

The Journal of Brief Ideas
http://beta.briefideas.org/

The Journal of Brief Ideas is a research journal, composed entirely of ‘brief ideas’. The goal here is to provide a place for short ideas to be described – in 200 words or less – for these ideas to be archived (courtesy of Zenodo), searchable and citable. They think that that there is an inherent inefficiency in scientific publishing due to the quantum (or minimum publishable amount) of research being too large. It can takes many years to do enough research for a publication in a top-tier journal. Meanwhile, all that intellectual capital is tied up solely in the heads of the researchers rather than circulating where it could be doing some good. Also, many research ideas and results are not publishable because they are small, negative, partial, or just don’t fit the criteria of other journals. But many of them can be expressed briefly and could aid other researchers. This will be added to Knowledge Discovery Subject Tracer™.
