The OpenLink Data Explorer (ODE) is a browser extension (currently available for Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera, and Internet Explorer with additional browser support to follow) that adds a new option to the realm of Web User Agent functionality, in the form of new menu options for viewing Data Sources associated with Web Pages. ODE allows Web users to explore the raw data and entity relationships that underly the Web resources it processes. The extension enables users to switch between Hypertext and Hyperdata link traversal of Web data. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. The FP7 project OpenAIRE aimed to support the implementation of Open Access in Europe. It provides the means to promote and realize the widespread adoption of the Open Access Policy, as set out by the ERC Scientific Council Guidelines for Open Access and the Open Access pilot launched by the European Commission. Its successor OpenAIREplus is aimed at linking the aggregated research publications to the accompanying research and project information, datasets and author information. The goal is to make through the portal www.openaire.eu, as much European funded research output as possible available to all. This research output, whether it is publications, datasets or project information is not only accessible through the OpenAIRE portal, extra functionalities are also offered, such as statistics, reporting tools and widgets – making OpenAIRE a useful support service for researchers, coordinators and project managers. OpenAIRE relies heavily on a decentralized structure where there is a representation in all member states (the so-called NOADs or National Open Access Desks) who can give specialized advice. If you have a question about a country-specific situation, you an contact them. Researchers working for European funded projects can participate by depositing their research output in their own repository, publish with participating journals or deposit directly in the OpenAIRE repository ZENODO– and indicating the project it belongs to in the metadata. Dedicated pages per project are visible on the OpenAIRE portal. OpenAIRE’s three main objectives are to: a) build support structures for researchers in depositing FP7 research publications through the establishment of the European Helpdesk and the outreach to all European member states through the operation and collaboration of 27 National Open Access Liaison Offices; b) establish and operate an electronic infrastructure for handling peer-reviewed articles as well as other important forms of publications (pre-prints or conference publications). This is achieved through a portal that is the gateway to all user-level services offered by the e-Infrastructure established, including access (search and browse) to scientific publications and other value-added functionality (post authoring tools, monitoring tools through analysis of document and usage statistics); and c) work with several subject communities to explore the requirements, pactices, incentives, workflows, data models, and technologies to deposit, access, and combine research datasets of various forms in combination with research publications. A core feature of the Census Bureau is the wide range of statistical reports and fact sheets that they provide for general consumption. Yet,journalists and others with a penchant for demography will appreciate this online multimedia gallery site that offers up radio features, videos, and photos for general use. Within Videos, visitors can look over clips on data visualizations, Stats in Action, and a nice overview of World Statistics Day. Moving on, the Photos area contains sections such as Census History, Facts for Features, and Lifestyle that document the Bureau’s activities. Access to a range of radio features can be found within the Audio section. These features provide great information on the bureau’s latest statistical profiles and ongoing research. Data is a valuable national resource and a strategic asset to the U.S. Government, its partners, and the public. Managing this data as an asset and making it available, discoverable, and usable – in a word, open – not only strengthens our democracy and promotes efficiency and effectiveness in government, but also has the potential to create economic opportunity and improve citizens’ quality of life. For example, when the U.S. Government released weather and GPS data to the public, it fueled an industry that today is valued at tens of billions of dollars per year. Now, weather and mapping tools are ubiquitous and help everyday Americans navigate their lives. The ultimate value of data can often not be predicted. That’s why the U.S. Government released a policy that instructs agencies to manage their data, and information more generally, as an asset from the start and, wherever possible, release it to the public in a way that makes it open, discoverable, and usable. The White House developed Project Open Data – this collection of code, tools, and case studies – to help agencies adopt the Open Data Policy and unlock the potential of government data. Project Open Data will evolve over time as a community resource to facilitate broader adoption of open data practices in government. Anyone – government employees, contractors, developers, the general public – can view and contribute. Learn more about Project Open Data Governance and dive right in and help to build a better world through the power of open data. Data.gov doesn’t just catalog raw data, it also includes APIs from across government. You can browse the current catalog for APIs, but expect this listing to grow as agencies include more of their APIs as part of their data.json metadata in Project Open Data. You can also find an extensive list of Federal Government APIs here on this page. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. Sharing data is hard. Emails have size limits, and setting up servers is too much work. They have designed a distributed system for sharing enormous datasets – for researchers, by researchers. The result is a scalable, secure, and fault-tolerant repository for data, with blazing fast download speeds. Currently making 1.68TB of research data available.
