The Centre d’etudes nordiques (CEN) is a research centre involving five departments (Biology, Geography, Geology, Botany and Land Use Planning) at Universite Laval and two other academic institutions, the Universite du Quebec a Rimouski (UQAR) and the Institut National de Recherche Scientifique – Centre Eau, Terre et Environnement.CEN researchers are also found at the Universite du Quebec a Trois-Rivières (UQTR) and at the Universite du Quebec a Montreal (UQAM). The scientific objective of the CEN is to understand extreme environments and how they respond to global change related to human activities.Research is conducted at high latitudes (polar regions), at high altitude (alpine environments), and in other environments affected by seasonal climatic constraints (such as cold winters). The CEN is also an academic centre where students are trained to analyze ecological processes and to assess environmental impacts especially in cold regions. The CEN’s members include approximately thirty researchers (regular and associate members), fifteen collaborators, more than one hundred graduate students and twenty employees. Écoscience is a multidisciplinary journal that stems from the need to create a forum for all ecologists. Écoscience publishes original work focusing on patterns and processes at various temporal and spatial scales and at different levels of biological organization. Écoscience welcomes work in evolutionary and behavioral ecology, ecophysiology, population and community ecology, landscape and ecosystem ecology, numerical ecology, dendroecology and, paleoecology.
